Yellowstone National park, part I

Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces.

The step like terraces form as heated water moves along the Morris-Mommoth Fault. The hot water carries dissolved calcium and bicarbonate to the surface of the terraces where pressure lessons. Carbon dioxide then escapes as gas and the carbonate combones with calcium to precipitate as travertine.

The mammoth Terraces are constantly changing shape and color. Fresh travertine is bright white in color and as it weathers it changes to gray.

Steam coming up from this bare hill.

Half of the forrest looks dead!

The hot springs seem to kill everything around itself, only a few survivors are seen.

Dead and alive, side by side.

This hot spring can blow more hot water up in the air than the famous Old Faithful, but so far it has only proved that once in the last 30 years, and you might have to wait 25 years to see it again..

Tourists walking amongst the fascinating hotsprings.
